With the demise of the Scion brand, parent company Toyota has absorbed some of its key models. The FR-S has been re-launched as the 86, while the iM becomes the Corolla iM.
Launched just last year as perhaps Scion's most conventional car to date, the Corolla iM joins the Toyota family effectively unchanged, but adds a few new features.
Starting 2017, all Corolla iM models feature Toyota's Safety Sense C package, which includes pre-collision braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. Buyers looking for radar cruise control or active lane-keeping assist might wish to consider the Corolla Sedan, which includes these features as a part of the Safety Sense P system.
The Corolla iM shares its design and underpinnings with the Toyota Auris, the Corolla Sedan's European cousin. Its styling is sleek, and has a modern and edgy look which stands out among the competition. The Corolla iM also features a fully independent rear suspension system for a smoother ride and enhanced cornering ability. A spacious cargo hold with flat-folding rear seats and standard tonneau cover gives it an edge up over the Corolla Sedan and some of its peers in terms of outright space.
In its transition from Scion to Toyota, the Corolla iM has retained its mono-spec level of equipment. The single trim comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, a stylish body kit, rear spoiler, and LED daytime running lights. It certainly doesn't look like a budget option.
Inside, the iM also receives sport bucket seats, gloss black interior trim, heated seats, power windows, heated mirrors keyless entry, air conditioning, dual automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, plus a 7.0-inch Pioneer display audio system with six speakers, USB, Bluetooth, and integrated reverse camera, as standard equipment.
Unlike some of its competitors, you can't get some upmarket features like leather seats, heated rear seats, or a proximity key with push-button start. Oddly, a moonroof is absent from the options list, too. The standard stereo system also lags behind in technology; although it offers Aha internet radio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Siri Eyes-Free are not yet available.
The Corolla iM is powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder motor with Valvematic for improved power and efficiency. Total output is 137 hp and 126 lb-ft of torque, which is low for the segment, but the engine runs on regular. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual or a CVT with seven artificial "gears" which drivers can toggle through. A sport mode provides sharper throttle response, too. On the plus side, the Corolla iM is economical, with a consumption rating that's as low as 8.3 L/100 km city and 6.5 L/100 km highway.
